The energy level at Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's started out high with Nita Whitaker's opening number, Change the World, and it never diminished. Taking the form of a journey through her musical influences, the show moved from gospel to Doris Day to an opera aria to Broadway to pop. It also included a couple of self-penned songs, Just Around the Corner and How Could a Love, that both packed an emotional wallop. She took a light-hearted approach to her White Girls Broadway medley by offering impressions of the original performances by Julie Andrews, Streisand and others. Recounting the experience of seeing her first Broadway show served to introduce her stirring rendition of When I First Saw You from Dreamgirls. Demonstrating that talent runs in the next generation, she brought her daughters, Skye and Lisi LaFontaine, onstage to sing For Good. Proud mother watched in the background. Musical director Nelson Kole, who performed his own show at Sterling's the week before, provided strong support.
