Only during the upper reaches of Vieni sul Mar did Bocelli's voice show strain. Once nestled in the lower range of the second half's romantic ballads, his singing grew in size and expressiveness - culminating in the biggest thrill of the night: a duet of Somos Novios with a magnetic singer named Nita Whitaker.
The former Miss Louisiana's rich vocal skills energized Bocelli; the two lifted a schmaltzy ballad to unexpected heights. What a shame it would be her only offering.
The tenor returned in encore with his first hit, Con Te Partiro, acknowledged the cheers, took a bow with his cohorts and left the stage with a simple goodbye wave.
